No. 11 Queens upset at Wingate

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team, currently ranked 11th in the nation, was upset this evening on the road at Wingate University by a score of 2-0. A win would have clinched the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title for the Royals, but they now sit at 8-1in the league after having their 11-game win streak snapped. Wingate improves to 7-2 in the league and 10-4 overall with the win.

Queens, who hasn't even trailed a team since they faced Tusculum at home in their fourth game of the season, found themselves in an unfamiliar situation when Peron Da Silva of the Bulldogs put the home team ahead, 1-0, 5:43 into action.

The Royals, attempting to equalize the match, would follow his score putting three shots in the stat book, but coming up unlucky.

Unfortunately for Queens, Wingate would find another goal in the 28th minute. This time, Charlie Machell would take a shot that straight lined over Queens goalkeeper Montrell Morgan and into the corner of the net. Wingate would take the 2-0 lead into the break.

The Royals turned up their defensive pressure in the second half while trying to find their offensive rhythm. Senior midfielder Thiago Andrade would put a shot on goal in the 66th that was turned away by Wingate goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff. Another great opportunity to get on the board came in the 80th with a set piece opportunity off of a corner kick, but nothing would come of the play after Andrade delivered the ball into box.

Senior midfielder Gersi Cilingiri would follow a few minutes later in the 84th with a header that went just wide of the net. The Royals would see their final chance to get on the board slip away almost three minutes later as a freshman defender Jonathan Onyeaka attempted to chip Wingate's keeper just missing the top of the net by a hair.
