Netto nets game-winner for Royals

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team was able to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Lees-McRae College Bobcats tonight with a 3-2 win at the Queens Sports Complex.  The Royals now hold a 2-0 league record (4-2 overall), while the Bobcats fall to 1-1 in conference action (2-6 overall).

Junior forward Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Modulo) scored the game-winning-goal in the 90th minute with a shot from the center of the box. Credited with creating the play was Gersi Cilingiri (Berat, Albania, Wolfson) who worked his way through a sea of green jerseys to send a pass into the box to Erick Suárez (Mexico City, Mexico, Myers Park). Suarez then fed Netto the ball who booted it into the net for the win.

The Royals went ahead early posting a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Cilingiri scored a goal off of a corner. Diego Suárez (Mexico City, Mexico, Myers Park) served the corner into play that was met by Drew Walsh's (Charlotte, N.C., Ardrey Kell) head before ultimately getting headed into the net by Cilingiri. Queens then scored another goal in the 22nd minute after a foul was committed on Thiago Andrade (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Modulo) in the box. Andrade was awarded a penalty kick which he zipped into the back right corner of the net. The goal gave the Royals a 2-0 lead which they held into the break.

The Bobcats came out in the second with a sense of urgency as James Galvani scored a goal in the 49th minute to bring the visiting Bobcats to within one, 2-1. Queens' defense would hold off the Bobcats attack until the 82nd, when Lees-McRae's Scott Alford, booted a free kick into the box. Scott Hudgins met the ball with his head putting it just out of John Rush's (Jacksonville, Fla., Bolles) reach.

Both teams increased their intensity in the final minutes with the Royals coming out on top after Netto's goal with 49-seconds on the clock. Lees-McRae's Galvani tried once more to even the score but his shot went wide as the clock ticked down to zero.

Queens' Rush collected his third win of the season with two saves, while Rusling of Lees-McRae took the loss in the net with five saves.

The Royals return to play on Tuesday, September 25 when they travel to face Lenoir-Rhyne College at 7 p.m.
