Box Score BELMONT, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Volleyball team was on the road again today as they faced off against conference rival Belmont Abbey. The Royals found themselves in a highly competitive match as today's competition went all five sets, and displayed why both teams are at the top of the conference.
The Royals were able to win the first two sets by the score of 25-22, but the Crusaders rallied from the deficit and won the next two sets 25-21 and 26-24. For the second night in the row Queens was forced to dig in and fight off a surging conference opponent in the decisive fifth set.
The Royals found themselves down early by the score of 6-2, but were able to tie the game up in a four point run. From there they traded blows with the Crusaders until they found themselves down at match point by the score of 14-13. For the first of four times in the set the Royals fought back from match point for their opponent and were able to prolong the match.
They eventually found themselves tied at 20 following
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary) 16
th kill of the match and fifth of the set. The Royals quickly went back to the red hot Kemp to give them the lead, and finished the game by the score of 22-20 on a Belmont Abbey attack error.
Kemp led the team with 17 kills, and was joined in double digits by
Anna Gibbs (Hickory),
Lindsey Everhart (McNicholas),
Ashlyn Dibrell (Lamar), and
Elizabeth Bialkowski (Millbrook) McKenzie Martin (Stratford) led the Royals' attack with 62 assists, and defensively
Jocelyn Kellinger (Cave Spring) anchored the Royals with 28 digs.
Following today's marathon match the Royals currently stand at 6-4 overall, and 2-0 in conference play. They travel to Erskine on Wednesday, and look to build on the five game winning streak they currently are on.
