Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte, seeded third in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, faced the No. 2 seed Pfeiffer University falling 8-7 in overtime this evening. The loss ends the Royals' lacrosse season at 8-6, while the Falcons advance to the championship game with an 11-5 record. Pfeiffer will face Limestone College on Sunday in the championship game. The Saints defeated Belmont Abbey 11-6 in game one of the day.
Today's game featured a low scoring first half with Pfeiffer netting the first score of the game at 13:09 in period one. The Royals would not notch a goal until 6:20 in the second when
Matthew Michael (Easton, Pa., Easton) put one in the back of the cage.
Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads) would follow with one of his own 1:10 before the break giving Queens a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room.
In the third, Tucker Hammock would score a goal for the Falcons before the Royals scored three consecutive points taking a 6-2 lead at 5:14 in period three. Pfeiffer's James Sheppard zipped the ball into the net with 32 seconds on the clock giving the game a 6-3 lead in Queens' favor at the start of the fourth.
The Falcons came out aggressive firing three into the net knotting things up at 6-6 with 8:41 to play. Queens would respond when
T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon) put Queens back on top by one after receiving a feed from
Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton). However, the Falcons had one more left in them equalizing things at 7-7. Neither team could find the back of the net in the final 3:27 of play as the game went into overtime.
At the start of the extra period the Falcons won the face and James Sheppard sprinted towards the net connecting on a shot 15 seconds into overtime for the win.
Geroy led Queens' offense today posting a hat trick.
Andrew Hyland (Newtown, Conn., Fairfield Prep) recorded 16 saves in the cage.
Sheppard completed the game with a hat trick for the Falcons, while Justin Rose totaled two goals. Hayden Kirk took the win in goal with nine saves.
In game one of the day Limestone reeled off 11 first half points en route to defeating the Crusaders 11-6. Though going scoreless in the second, the Saints held on as Belmont Abbey struggling on the offensive end to get hot. Riley Loewen, Corey Rich, Desi Gonzalez and Jackson Decker each notched two goals for the Saints. Dan Morrisey and Joey McGinley tallied three apiece for the Crusaders.
Sunday's championship game will be played at the Queens Sports Complex following the women's game which begins at 1 p.m.
