Royals Fall in Tight Game with Keydets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (2-3) battled with the Keydets of VMI (2-3) this afternoon, falling 11-10 in the nonconference game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Queens opened today's game with the momentum, scoring four unanswered goals before the Keydets found the back of the cage for the first time at 5:23 in the first. VMI then opened the second quarter with a pair to close the margin to one, 4-3, with 7:24 left in the half. A goal from Queens' Carter Petersen took the Royals into the break in front 5-3.
 
Following a goal from Queens' Will McKay in the third quarter, VMI scored three straight to tie the game at 6-6. McKay connected on his third of the day with 4:02 left in the period to give control of the lead back to Queens, and a goal from Zach Miller put the Royals up 8-6. However, the Keydets snuck another ball into the cage with 12 seconds on the clock to give the game an 8-7 score heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
 
Back-to-back goals from VMI's Beau Durkin gave the Keydets their first lead of the day, 9-8, early in the fourth. Queens would answer with a pair to take a one-point lead with 7:33 left in regulation, but the two goals would be their last of the day as VMI's Ty Yonas tied the game, 10-10, with a goal at 3:51. Ethan Ostrowski then scored the game-winner for the Keydets with 3:17 left in regulation.

  • Will McKay recorded his first hat trick as a Royal, while Carter Petersen recorded his third straight this season.
  • Michael White recorded three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Blake Falco totaled five ground balls.
  • Noah McGovern recorded a career-high 14 saves in goal for Queens.
  • Beau Durkin led VMI with a hat trick, while Austin English and Dayton Bagwell had two goals each.
  • Adam Norris totaled eight saves for VMI to record the win in goal.
  • VMI outshot the Royals 41-34, putting 25 shots on goal compared to Queens' 18.
  • VMI totaled 34 ground balls compared to Queens' 25.
  • VMI dominated at the faceoff, winning 21-25.
