Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Royals hosted their first ever Strike Out Cancer event to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. In their doubleheader against St. Andrews the Royals wore special pink uniforms, and had the Sue Helterbran, a breast cancer survivor and mother of the assistant coach, throw out the first pitch.
The Royals also added to the festivities on the diamond with 3-1 victory in game one, and a 6-0 win in game two. Following today's wins the Royals are 26-22 on the season, and 14-5 in conference play.
In game one it was senior ace
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) who took the circle, and from the beginning she was in top form. Dodge went the whole way, and struck 11 batters while only allowing two hits in the game. The Knights appeared to be off balance all game as Dodge consistently changed the location and speed of her pitches.
In the batters box the Royals were able to collect nine hits, but left the game feeling like they could have scored more than just three runs after leaving nine runners on base. Freshmen
Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland), and
Amanda Meade (Bristow, Va., Osbourn Park) paced the Royals batters with two hits apiece, and
Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) scored two of the Royals runs.
In game two is was freshman
Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C., Raban Gap Nacoochee) who took the circle, and from the start she was in control of the game. Scott went the whole way, and only allowed three hits while striking out eight.
The Royals bats heated up after game one, and they were able to pound in six runs, and had nine hits in the game. Leading the team with two hits apiece were
Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ),
Shelby O'Brien (Navarre, Fla., Homeschooled), and Britt. Providing additional fireworks in the sixth inning was pinch hitter
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) (Navarre, Fla., Homeschooled) who blasted a home run over the fence in left center.
The Royals return to Park Road Park tomorrow for their Senior Day when they take on Barton College in a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
