Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) scored six goals this evening helping the Royals roll past Converse College in women's lacrosse action. The Royals defeated the Valkyries 18-7 improving their conference record to 3-2 (6-9). Converse dropped to 1-3 in the league and 5-8 overall.
The Royals outscored Converse 6-1 in the first 15 minutes of play before the Valkyries notched three in a row bringing them to within two, 6-4, of the home team. Queens then closed the half zipping four into the net, two coming from Barnwell, to head into the locker room with a 10-4 lead.
Sam Green of Converse would tally the first goal of the second, but Queens soon responded scoring six consecutive goals pushing their lead to 11 forcing the 10 run rule into effect.
Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) notched three during the spurt. The Valkyries answered with two within 30 seconds of each other making trying to make a final push, however Philip and Barnwell would end the game with one more goal apiece for the 18-7 win.
Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) led the Royals with seven points today after recording two goals and five assists. She also tallied three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Barnwell added six ground balls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers to her stat line. Philip dished out two assists giving her six points alongside her nine draw controls and five ground balls. The senior attacker was also a perfect 3-3 on free-position-shots.
Kristi Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Winter Springs) found the back of the net four times, while
Kenna Wick (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs) collected three assists.
Green led the Valkyries with four goals and one assist. She also collected four ground balls. Alexandra Gurecki took the loss in net with 18 saves, six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Queens outshot Converse 45-16 and won 21 draw controls to the Valkyries' six.
Chelsea Lancashire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Nease) and
Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md., North Harford) split time in the net collecting five saves total.
The Royals will return to the turf on Saturday as they host Pfeiffer at noon for Senior Day.
