Queens softball takes two over Braves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team hosted UNC-Pembroke in a doubleheader today at Park Road Park. The Royals were able to pick up two wins, and displayed both their bats and pitching in an effort that brought their record to 22-22 on the season.

In the first game the Royals caught fire at the plate and pounded out eight runs and thirteen hits to win the game 8-0 in just five innings. Leading the way for the Royals was freshman Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) who went 3-3 at the plate. Adding to the offense was senior Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) and junior Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) who each had two hits in the game.

Senior pitcher Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) went all five innings from the circle as she continued to add to her already stellar year. Dodge limited the Braves to just four hits in the game, and only allowed one extra base hit.

The Royals' pitching was once again the story when they took on UNC-Pembroke in game two. Freshman Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C., Raban Gap Nacoochee) took the mound and surrendered only one earned run in five plus innings pitched. Scott displayed excellent use of her dropball, and consistently pitched the team out of jams. Fellow freshman Amanda Rodriguez (Bear Creek, N.C., Chatham Central) relieved her in the fifth, and pitched an inning and a third of shutout ball to pick up the win for the Royals.

The Royals struggled to get their bats going in game two and only picked up four hits in seven innings. Despite a cooled off offense, they were able to score two runs in the sixth to give them a 2-1 win. In a game full of exciting plays it was freshman Shelby O'Brien (Navarre, Fla., Homeschooled) who provided the final spark the Royals needed to win when she drove the winning run in on a single to right field.

The Royals return to action this Thursday when they take on Lees-McRae at Park Road Park at 2 p.m.
