Royals drop conference game to Crusaders

The Royals fell 10-6.

Box Score BELMONT, N.C. – A first half five point deficit proved to be too much for the Royals to overcome as they fell 10-6 to Belmont Abbey College in women's lacrosse action at Alumni Field. Queens University of Charlotte's record dropped to 4-7 on the season and 1-2 in the league, while the Crusaders improved to 4-5 on the year and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas.

Queens scored three goals on its first three shots, the last of which knotted the game at three with 19:25 to play in the first. After Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) goal, the Crusaders would open things up scoring six of the last seven in the half giving them a 9-4 advantage heading into the break.

The second half was much quieter on the offensive end with a combined total of three goals being scored thanks to the effort in goal on both ends. The keepers stopped a total of 18 shots, 11 from Taylor Morgan of Belmont Abbey and seven from Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md., North Harford) of Queens.

Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) brought the Royals to within three of the Crusaders scoring Queens' two goals in the second, but that was as close as the Royals would get as Belmont Abbey notched one more before closing things out with a four point edge.

The Royals were outshot by the Crusaders, 30-29. Belmont Abbey also won the battle for draw controls 10-8.

Philip led the Royals with three goals, four draw controls and two ground balls. Casey, Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) and Kristi Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Winter Springs) each had one goal. Casey also had two assists and Paige Fisher (Schwenksville, Pa., Perkiomen Valley) had one.

Elyse Mohn led the Crusaders with three goals and one assist. Rebecca Diggs and Lindsay Connolly each notched two.

The Royals will travel to face Lees-McRae on Saturday at 1 p.m.
