Baugh scores game-winner over Mocs

The Royals defeated Florida Southern 7-6.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With two minutes left to play Thomas Baugh (Cornelius, N.C., Christ School) forced a turnover by the Mocs, scooping the ball up and running down the field to zip the ball into the net for the game-winning-goal at 1:52. Queens University of Charlotte defeated Florida Southern College 7-6 ending their two game skid and improving to 4-2 on the season. The Mocs fall to 3-5 on the year.

T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon) led the Royals with three goals, while Evan Farkas (Havre de Grace, M.D., C. Milton Wright) added two. Patrick Murphy (Easton, Pa., Easton) scored one goal for Queens and collected four ground balls. Dillon Draper (Huntingtown, Md., The Calverton School) caused six turnovers on the defensive end of the field leading all on the turf, while Andrew Hyland (Newtown, Conn., Fairfield Prep) had a great night in the net facing 24 shots on goal and getting 18 stops for the win.

Dane Sorensen led the Mocs with three goals, while Ricky DeMicco netted two. DeMicco also tallied four ground balls with Adam Ismaeil. Andrew Almansber took the loss in the cage after notching nine saves.

DeMicco scored the first goal of the game at 6:35 before Queens' Murphy possessed a ground ball taking it the length of the field for the score to even things up at 1-1. Despite about an hour of stoppage due to lightning, Queens was able to end the first period up 2-1.

In the second, the Royals went up 3-1 after Whaley netted his first goal on a feed from Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads). Florida Southern's Sorensen would respond bringing the Mocs within one of the home team before the half.

Forty-five seconds into the third period, DeMicco knotted the game up at 3-3 after receiving a pass from Kevin Naslonski. Whaley of Queens would answer with back-to-back scores putting the Royals back ahead just before Sorensen found two more for the Mocs to keep things even at the close of the period, 5-5.

The teams would trade goals in the final period until Baugh scored his game-winner. The Mocs had one final possession to tie things up, but a turnover caused by Draper would end their hopes.

Florida Southern outshot the Royals 34-30, while Queens edged the Mocs in ground balls 22-21.

Queens will travel to face Catawba on March 21 at 7 p.m.
