CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte tennis teams returned from their spring break with a bang today. The Royals took on conference foe Lees-McRae and made quick work of the opposition with the women winning 9-0 and the men 8-1.
On the men's side the Royals swept the doubles competition with the pairings of
Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada, L'Essor Secondary School) and
Raahil Dhruva (London, England, Parmiter's),
Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) and
Ignacio Casali (Farmingdale, N.Y., Farmingdale), and
Andre Bafume (Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ateneo) and
Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario). Queens also picked up five wins in two sets during their singles pairings. Lee-Daigle, Casali, Dhruva, Bafume and Munhoz all picked up wins and showed the strength the 33rd ranked Royals can bring to bear as they chase a conference title. The men's record now stands at 5-4.
The women were able to take advantage of the short-handed Bobcats, and were paced by strong performances by the doubles pairing of
Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) and
Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson), and
Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) and
Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School). In the singles matches, Rustscheff, Roberts, Williams and
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) all notched two set victories against their opponents. The women's record now stands at 6-2 and they return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Columbia College.
Today was also of note as Aaron Peterson (class of 1993) returned to face Queens in his first year as head coach at Lees McRae.
