Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Queens University of Charlotte faced Georgia Southwestern State University today dropping both games in the series to the Hurricanes. The Royals fell 3-2 in the first game and 6-5 in the second after GSW came from behind scoring four unanswered runs in the seventh. Queens now sits at 1-3 on the season after their opening weekend, while the Hurricanes begin their season at 2-2.
Freshman
Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) collected two RBIs today on four hits, while
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee),
Amanda Meade (Bristow, Va., Osbourn Park) and
Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) each notched two hits apiece. Dodge was also able to score two runs alongside
Emily Poulton (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak).
Senior pitcher Dodge took the mound in game one striking out two and giving up 10 hits, while freshman
Amanda Rodriguez (Bear Creek, N.C., Chatham Central) pitched in game two striking out one and giving up 16 hits.
The Royals went up 2-0 in the second inning of game one with help from GSW's defense. The Royals were able to get on base and advance to score taking advantage of errors from the Hurricanes.
In the third inning, Gabby Buck singled to centerfield and used her speed to get to second base on the throw. Jessica Chewning scored a run for the Hurricanes on the play making the score 2-1.
Neither team would score again until GSW closed the game with two runs at the bottom of the seventh for the win.
In the game two, Queens would score the first run of the game at the bottom of the first after Britt brought Dodge home with a single. Dodge got on base after singling to left field as Queens' second at bat.
Action picked back up in the fifth when Poulton scored a run stealing home. A wild pitch followed allowing Turner to race home for Queens' third run of the game. Britt then batted Dodge in from second after hitting a double to left field. Dodge had gotten herself to first after singling to centerfield. She then advanced to second after
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) was hit by a pitch.
With the Royals leading 4-0, the Hurricanes got on the board scoring two runs at the top of the sixth on the back of three doubles. The Royals responded as Poulton put Queens up 5-2 scoring a run in the bottom.
GSW continued their momentum into the seventh getting six hits and scoring four runs to take the one run win.
The Royals will face Carson-Newman College on Wednesday for their 2012 home opener. The doubleheader event is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Park Road Park.
