Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) teamed up again today to lead the Royals past the Flying Fleet of Erskine College. Queens University of Charlotte defeated Erskine by 19 points, 76-57, inside Belk Arena advancing to 4-7 in the league and 6-14 on the season. The Fleet fall to 6-6 in conference action and 9-11 on the year.
Myatt scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while grabbing 14 rebounds and five steals. Pettaway finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) and
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) had solid showings scoring 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes)recorded nine points, six boards and four assists.
Erskine controlled the lead for a short time early in the game until a bucket by Myatt tied things up at 6-6.
Dyonna Battle would score the next point from the foul line giving the Royals the lead for the first time with 15:12 on the clock. The Fleet stuck around tying the game up a few times more before Queens was able to create some space with a 9-0 run going up 30-22 with 2:32 left to play in the first. At the break, the Royals led 33-25.
Queens opened the second half with seven points in just over a minute of play increasing their lead to 14. The Fleet got to within nine after Lindsey Weidenaar delivered a bucket from three-point range, but that was as close as they would get as the Royals broke the game wide open going up by 19, 64-45, at the five-minute mark.
Erskine was unable to find an answer for Queens' play in the post as the Royals outscored the Fleet 36-20 in the paint, while scoring 21 second chance points compared to Erskine's seven. The Royals grabbed 48 rebounds to Erskine's 34.
Porsha Morgan led the Fleet with 21 points. Jana Dixon and Weidenaar scored nine points apiece. Dixon also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Queens is back at home on Wednesday against St. Andrews University at 5:30 p.m.
