Queens picks up two in doubleheader with Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Royals took the field today against the Mars Hill College Lions taking both games paced by several strong individual performances. Queens University of Charlotte's softball team won by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 improving their record to 8-11 on the season. The Lions drop to 10-10.

In the first game the story was the resilient pitching of Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) who struck out six and limited Mars Hill to only seven hits. Dodge displayed her mental toughness as she frequently found herself with runners in the scoring position. This was especially true in the fifth frame as Dodge stopped the Lions' offense with the bases loaded and no outs.

The Royals won the game behind a clutch triple by shortstop Amanda Meade (Bristow, Va., Osbourn Park) in the second inning. She slammed a ball to deep left field and drove in Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) and Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) for the game's only runs.

The second game of the doubleheader was once again a low scoring affair as the Royals were able to grind out the victory. Dodge once again earned the victory, but it was the strong pitching of freshmen Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C., Raban Gap Nacoochee) and Amanda Rodriguez (Bear Creek, N.C., Chatham Central) through first five innings that kept the Lions cold.

The Royals won the batting battle in the game as they outhit Mars Hill 11-5. Pacing the Royals was Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland)Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) and Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ) who all had two hits apiece. Queens found itself tied in the sixth inning when they broke the game open on a Britt double that scored Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central).

Queens travels to face North Greenville University this Friday to open conference play.
