Queens opens season with win over Bears

The Royals defeated LRU 10-5.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte opened its women's lacrosse season with a 10-5 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University this evening at the Queens Sports Complex. The Royals begin their season at 1-0 with the win, while the Bears will start at 0-1.

Leading Queens' scoring for the evening was Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) with a hat trick. She also dished out one assist giving her a total of four points. Also collecting four points was Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) who scored two goals and tallied two assists. Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) returned to the field tonight after sitting out all last season to notch two goals.

The Bears were led by Sarah and Mary Minick who each notched two goals. Lauren Donovan recorded the one other goal for the visiting team.

The Royals scored the first goal after over 12 minutes of play when Casey found the back of the net. A little over five minutes later her goal was followed by two more from Queens. Sarah Minick of the Bears would net two goals for the visitors before the half making the score 4-2 at the break.

Philip scored her first goal of the game on a free-position-shot in the second at 26:55. The Bears then cut Queens' lead to one, 5-4, with back-to-back goals.  At 21:08 Caitlin Miller (Bethany Beach, Del., Worcester Prep) found a slashing Casey for her second goal of the game to put Queens back up by two, but a free-position-shot from Mary Minick would allow the Bears to trail by one.

The Royals stepped up their offensive pressure in the final 16 minutes extending their lead to five with four more goals for the win.

Queens outshot the Bears 36-13 and won 12 draw controls to Lenoir-Rhyne's five. Caitlin Flanagan (West Islip, N.Y., West Islip) and Akasha Kasper (Greensboro, N.C., Western Guilford) each scooped up five ground balls for Queens. Flanagan also caused four turnovers.

The Royals will travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
