Royals extend win streak to three with win over King

The Royals defeated King76-62.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With a 76-62 win over King College today in Grady Cole Center, the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte extended their winning streak to three. The Tornado drop to 4-11 in conference play and 4-19 on the year, while the Royals improve to 6-7 in the league and 8-14 on the season.

Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led her squad scoring 21 points and collecting eight rebounds. Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) and Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Queens shot 41.9-percent from the floor in the first half and held the Tornado to just 24.1-percent shooting en route to building a 41-18 lead at the half. A 9-0 run created breathing room for the Royals as they saw themselves leading 21-9 with 9:54 to play in the first. With the clock sitting at 2:48, Myatt scored a layup sparking a 10-0 run to close the half.

Jana Gross scored a three-pointer with 10:45 left in regulation closing Queens' lead to 12 in the second. The Royals quickly responded with a 12-0 spurt extending their lead out to 24. The Tornado didn't go down easily as a few shots from three-point range had them down by 12 once again with 3:40 to play. However, that was as close as King would get as Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) knocked down a few buckets keeping Queens out of reach.

The Tornado had five players reach double digit scoring with Kelly Jackson's 16 points leading the way. Alley Sprouse scored 13 and Gross added 11, while Brooke Johnson and Brittany Kinser each notched 10.

The Royals will travel to take on Pfeiffer University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
