Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore guard
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) led Queens University of Charlotte's women's basketball team to a 66-58 non-conference victory over Catawba College at home this afternoon. The Royals improve to 4-2 with the win, while the Indians drop to 4-5 on the season.
Sweet finished the game with a game-high 19 points, 14 of which she scored in the first half. The point guard also collected six assists, five rebounds and five steals.
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) scored 14 points, while
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) added 11. Pettaway also grabbed six boards for the second highest amount on the team behind
Lacey Singletary (Burlington, N.C., Oak Ridge) who completed the game with 10 to lead all on the court.
Queens traded baskets with the Indians throughout the first half before putting together a 15-6 run to take a 10-point lead, 30-20, with 3:02 to play. Catawba's Quanesha Coleman would knock down a free-throw to cut the lead back to single digits, but Queens' Sweet would follow with eight straight points to end the half. The Royals headed into the break with a 38-21 lead.
Queens would experience a scoring drought in the second allowing the Indians to chip their way back into the game. After two free-throws from
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) gave the Royals 45 points, Queens would go scoreless for a little over eight minutes. During that time, the Indians went on a 12-0 run to get back in the game. A layup from Singletary put Queens up three, but Catawba would respond with two fast-break buckets taking a one-point lead, 48-47, with 7:23 on the clock.
Following a timeout on the court, Hardy would net a three-pointer to put the home team up two, but the Indians had an answer with a three of their own to regain their one-point advantage. Three ties would follow before an offensive rebound and put-back by Singletary would give Queens the lead for good at 1:28.
Elizabeth Merritt and Chloe Bully led the Indians with 16 points apiece. Antoinette McPhail added 10.
Queens will travel to face Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, December 19 at 7 p.m. before breaking for the holiday season.
