Royals down Flying Fleet

Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – Sophomore forward Lacey Singletary (Burlington, N.C., Oak Ridge) scored 16 points, while junior forward Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Queens University of Charlotte past Erskine College this evening in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action. The Royals defeated the Flying Fleet 74-62 to improve to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league. Erskine dropped to 0-5 on the year and 0-2 in the league.
 
Also producing for the Royals was freshman guard Nikia Squire (Columbia, S.C., Ridge View) who completed the game with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) added 10 points. Singletary also pulled down nine boards for Queens.
 
The Fleet jumped ahead by as much as 14 points in the first half before the Royals began their attack cutting Erskine's lead to three just before the break. A half-court shot by Erskine's Haleigh Spaulding at the buzzer would give the home team a six-point lead, 35-29, at the half.
 
Queens quickly tied things up at 35-35 a little over two minutes into the second half before taking their first lead of the game on a pair made free-throws from Hardy at 17:05. Erskine would regain the lead once more before Queens would take over the game going up by as much as 12. Queens would secure its win in the final 3:14 keeping the Fleet from scoring a single field goal.
 
Chelsea Frazier and Tori Whittenberg led Erskine's offense with 17 points apiece.
 
The Royals will compete again on Saturday when they travel to take on the Tornado of King College at 5:30 p.m.
