Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Tournament today. In their third match against the Crusaders this year, the Royals were unable to remain undefeated against the Crusaders and dropped the match 3-0.
In the first set the Royals found themselves in a battle with a closely matched team, and exchanged points before finding themselves down 12-8. The Royals continued to battle back and found the game knotted at 15-15 following a kill by
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) After several kills by Hannah Schellenburg Belmont Abbey once again took a lead and did not give it up for the remainder of the set, winning by the score of 25-23
In the second set the Royals once again found themselves in a hole with Belmont Abbey leading 13-8. Showing their resiliency the Royals were able to claw back into the game and tie the match at 13 following a killby
Elizabeth Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C., Millbrook) From there the Royals and Crusaders paced each other, and eventually found the game tied at 25. With Angela Jubb kill and Queens service error Belmont Abbey finished the set with a 27-25 win.
Following the intermission the third set proved to be the same story with both teams exchanging points throughout. With the teams remaining tight throughout it was Gibbs and
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) picking up multiple kills. Despite their offensive effort the Royals eventually dropped the set 25-23 following consecutive Lydia Schellenburg kills.
The Royals were paced by Gibbs with 11 kills and
McKenzie Martin (Houston, Texas, Stratford) picked up 33 assists from her setter position.
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) anchored the Royals with 11 digs, and she was joined in double digits by Martin.
The Royals finish the season with a 23-11 overall record, and 13-2 finish in conference.
