Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a game-tying goal scored by Queens University of Charlotte's
Thiago Andrade (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Modulo) in the 86
th minute forced tonight's game into overtime, the Catawba College Indians were able to sneak out of the Queens Sports Complex with a 2-1 win with a goal scored in the 92
nd. With the win, the Indians, ranked 10
th in the NSCAA Southeast Region, are 6-2-3 overall. The Royals are now 5-5 on the season.
The Indians struck early in the 18
th netting a goal for a 1-0 lead when Valentin Nava slid a ball just past Queens' keeper,
Montrell Morgan (Charlotte, N.C., East Mecklengburg) from the right side of the box. Carson Smith was awarded the assist after feeding Nava the ball from the far side of the field. With the lead, the Indians then turned up their defensive pressure swarming the Royals on every possession making it tough for the home team to get shots off.
In the second, a bicycle kick from
Erick Suárez (Mexico City, Mexico, Myers Park) drilled the chest of Catawba's keeper, Frankie Cardelle, and a shot from right in front of the goal by
Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior) went just over the crossbar before Andrade's game-tying goal found the back of the net.
Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Modulo) found Andrade racing up the field passing him the ball just before he blasted it into the right corner of the net. Four minutes later the Royals' Chambers booted a ball towards the goal for the win, but his shot was turned away by Catawba's Cardelle taking the game into overtime.
Just under two minutes into the overtime period Catawba's Corey Faughnan scored the golden goal after rebounding a blocked shot and placing it in the net.
The Royals took 11 shots to Catawba's 16, and won six corner shots this evening. Morgan collected six saves before leaving the game due to injury.
Queens returns home on Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. to take on Barton College.
