Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, G.A. – The the Queens University of Charlotte Volleyball team travelled to Augusta, Georgia today to participate in a tournament hosted by Augusta State. In the first day of action the Royals were able to go one and one with a win against Clark-Atlantic before falling to host Augusta State.
In their matchup against Clark-Atlantic the Royals dominated the match with ease starting with an opening point kill by
Tori Hernandez (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesvillle) that set the tone for the set and match.
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) also showed off her offensive prowess, and picked up five of her six kills in the first set to help give the Royals a 25-6 win.
In the second set Queens' offense caught fire once again and the Royals hit for an incredible .600 as team. Leading the way was
Katrina Kirby (Leesburg, Va., Loudon County) with four kills, followed by
Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, Ohio, McNicholas) and
Katie Schoenrock (Stanley, N.C., Southlake Christian Academy) with three kills apiece. With the offense clicking the Royals took an early lead and never looked back, finishing the set 25-10.
The Royals wrapped the game up in the third set with a 25-16 win. In the set the Royals were able to race to a 13-2 lead behind the serving of
Liza Schimmelfing (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) who picked up three service aces in a row. From there the Royals cruised to victory with 13 kills on 32 attempts.
Offensively the Royals were led by Everhart with seven kills on a .778 hitting percentage, and
McKenzie Martin (Houston, Texas, Stratford) had 25 assists in the match and was joined in double digits by
Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) with 10 assists. Defensively libero
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) picked up 10 digs.
In the second match of the day the Royals took on the host Augusta State in an extremely competitive match. The Royals stood toe-to-toe with the Jaguars through five sets before eventually losing the hard fought match.
From the beginning it was a close match as the Royals dropped the first set 25-16, but rallied to take the second 25-23. From there the Jaguars took the third set 25-23 before Queens struck back with a 25-23 win of their own. Tied at 2-2 the Augusta State was able to overcome the scrappy Royals with a 15-9 win in the decisive set.
Offensively
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) led the Royals in kills with 16, and Gibbs joined her with 10. Martin continued to dictate the offense from her setter position, and ended the match with 39 assists. Defensively the Royals were dominant above the net with 18 block assists, and Kellinger led the Royals with 11 digs and was joined by
Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) with 10.
The Royals currently stand at 16-9 on the season, and conclude the Augusta State tournament tomorrow when they take on Francis Marion.
