Thomas’ hot hand not enough as Royals fall to Pfeiffer

The Royals were defeated 69-58.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore guard Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) poured in a season-high 21 points tonight in Queens University of Charlotte's 69-58 loss to Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at the Grady Cole Center. The loss drops Queens to 3-10 overall, 1-3 in league play, while the Falcons improve to 8-5, 3-1.

The Royals controlled most of the first half after beginning the game with a 5-0 run. Queens saw its largest lead of the half at 14:50 when Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) knocked down a short-range jumper in the paint. Pfeiffer then clawed their way back to knot the contest at 22-22 with 6:17 on the clock after a three-ball from Kaela Bellefeuil. Bellefeuil's  The Falcons took over the lead with just under three minutes remaining as Jodie Lemons drained a pair of free throws to put Pfeiffer up 29-28 to start a string of eight-straight points for Pfeiffer closing out the half.

The Falcons raced out to an 18-point lead coming up on the midway point of the second as Bellefeuil drained another triple along with a layup from Hayley Grimsley. A jumper by Brittany Cox maintained the 18-point advantage through the five minute mark during the 11-point win.

Thomas connected on 7-of-11 of her shots to capture her 21 points. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) added 19 points and 11 boards for her fifth double-double of the season. Myatt completed the game with eight points, and Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) dished out seven assists.

Grimsley led the Lady Falcons with 17 points while Lemons added 13. Cox, who played just 90 seconds in the first half due to foul trouble, concluded with 10. Kellie Rhoney, currently ranked in the nation's top-15 in assists per game, added eight more in the win.

The Royals will host North Greenville University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Grady Cole Center.
