SALISBURY, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season defeating Catawba College 2-1 at Frock Field. The Royals even their record at 1-1, while the Indians fall to 2-3.
After nearly an entire scoreless half,
Oskar Hjerne Sundbaum (Froson, Sweden, Wargentiusskolan) sent a long free kick from 40 yards into the box that
Gersi Cilingiri (Berat, Albania, Wolfson) headed in from the six with just over a minute left in the opening period putting the Royals on top heading in to the break.
Catawba equalized in the 57th minute as Carson Smith headed home a cross to the back post from Valentin Nava from just in front of the goal mouth.
Ten minutes later,
Alvaro Guerra (Valencia, Venezuela, Woodward Academy) got through on a breakaway in the 68th to score the winning goal.
Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior) slid a pass up the middle that Guerra raced onto before dribbling past the goalkeeper and firing into the empty net from 10 yards out.
The Royals held a 12-6 edge in shots and took eight corners to three for Catawba. Queens' keeper
John Rush (Jacksonville, Fla., Bolles) made one save on two Catawba shots on goal. Evan Harvey played nearly 83 minutes in goal for the Indians and recorded three saves.
In addition to tonight's win being the first of the season for Royals, it is their first win under the leadership of Head Coach
Oliver Carias.
The Royals travel to St. Andrews Presbyterian Saturday at 4 p.m. for their first Conference Carolinas match of the year.
