Men’s lacrosse closes season with Senior Day victory over Bears

The Royals defeated the Bears 14-10.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton) and Ryan Stansley (Sylvania, Ohio, Northview) recorded eight and six points, respectively, in today's Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse game pacing the Royals past the Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears at the Queens Sports Complex. This afternoon's game was also Senior Day as the men's lacrosse class of 2011 was recognized during halftime for their achievements and contributions to the program.

Stansley scored the first goal of the game with 7:39 to go in the first quarter assisted by Baker. Baker soon after assisted another Queens goal scored by Alex Warehime (Millersville, Md., Old Mill ) giving the Royals a 2-0 lead. However, the Bears responded strong closing the period with three straight goals taking over the lead heading in to the second.

In the second quarter, Luke Nealon put Lenoir-Rhyne up two with a goal at 14:35. The Royals answered firing off a 5-to-0 run regaining control of the game. Each team closed the half with one more goal giving the Royals an 8-to-5 advantage going in to the break.

Queens outscored the Bears 3-to-1 in the third stretching their lead out to as much as six during the period.

Lenoir-Rhyne worked to force a comeback in the fourth, but the Royals lead proved to be too much as Queens held on for the 14-10 win.

Queens outshot the Bears 56-to-31 and scooped up 41 ground balls to Lenoir-Rhyne's 24. The Royals also edged the Bears in face-offs winning 14 of the 26.

Stansley finished with four goals and two assists while Baker scored three goals and dished out five assists. Alex Wesenberg (Bloominton, Minn., Jefferson) scored two goals as Kevin Hornik (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) chipped in two assists. Joe Taylor (Aurburn, N.Y., Auburn)and Baker each collected eight ground balls. Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) and Rob Bacharach (Baltimore, Md., Dulaney) split time in goal recording a combined eight saves.

The Bears were led by Anthony Mangili who notched three goals. Nealon finished with two goals and one assist. Gus Brighton took the loss in goal after getting 17 stops.
