Royals shocked by No. 1 Limestone

The Royals were defeated 24-3 by the Saints.

GAFFNEY, S.C. – No.7 Queens University of Charlotte traveled to Gaffney, S.C. falling 24-3 to the top-ranked Saints of Limestone College on Saturday, April 2nd in a clash of Conference Carolinas and South Region unbeatens.  The loss for the Royals breaks their seven game win streak while also pushing the Saints to 10-0 overall, 4-0 in the Conference and 9-0 in the region while Queens fell to 7-2, 3-2 CC and 7-1 in the region.

The Limestone offense was led by junior attack Shayne Jackson who tallied a game high six points scoring four goals while adding two assists.  Junior midfielders Desi Gonzalez, Jackson Decker, and sophomore attack Riley Loewen each scored four points.  Loewen and Gonzalez had four goals apiece while Decker had three goals and one assist.  Senior midfielder Sam Buppert had three assists and was one of two with a three point day as freshman attack Todd Nakasuji scored once and added two helpers.

Matthew Michael (Easton, Pa., Easton) led the Royals with two goals while Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton) scored the other. Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) picked up the loss in goal after collecting 15 stops.

Limestone's Steve Gartelman made seven saves and yielded three goals in 47:09 of playing time and was one of three goalies to see action for the Saints.

Limestone held a 30-15 advantage in ground balls and outshot Queens 62-40 overall including 40-11 in shots-on-goal. Queens cleared the ball on 14-of-19 attempts as the Saints did so on 19-of-20.

The Royals are back in action against St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C., on April 5th at 4 pm.
