CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte handed Southern New Hampshire University its first loss this evening defeating the Penmen 18-13 in non-conference women's lacrosse action, while also breaking a three-game skid. The Royals improve to 3-3 (1-0 CC) while Southern New Hampshire falls to 1-1 on the season.
Pacing the Royals this evening was Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) and Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) who each tallied seven points. Philip netted five goals and notched two assists, while Casey scored three goals and dished out four assists. Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva) chipped in four goals for Queens as Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) scored three.
Queens jumped out to an early lead over the visiting Penmen going on an eight-to-one run. Jade Antonangeli scored a goal for Southern New Hampshire at 8:40 breaking the Penmen's nearly 12 minute scoring drought. Her goal was followed by one from Ashley Chu on a free-position-shot making the score 8-3. Queens would respond with three more goals, two from Casey, before the Penmen found another to close the half.
At the break, Queens led 11-4.
Queens' large first half lead proved to be beneficial as the Penmen outscored Queens 9-7 in the second half of play.
Antonangeli notched two quick goals at the beginning of the second half bringing the Penmen to within five of Queens. Another goal by the Penmen's Sara Halbich at 26:07 led to a Queens timeout. Coming out of the timeout Philip and Martin scored back-to-back goals for Queens giving the game a score of 14-7.
The Royals closed the half scoring three more goals to hold on for the 18-13 win.
Queens outshot the Penmen 41-to-35 tongiht. The Royals also forced their opponent into 30 turnovers. Southern New Hampshire collected 46 ground balls to Queens' 42, and possessed 18 draw controls to the Royals' 15.
Emily Balmer (Damascus, Md., Damascus) led Queens with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Elizabeth Janaskie (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ), Akasha Kasper (Greensboro, N.C., Western Guilford), and Philip each tallied five ground balls. Chelsea Lancashire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Nease) recorded the win in goal collecting 12 saves.
Leading the Penmen was Antonangeli with four goals. Emily Mongeau and Ellie Morin each recorded hat tricks. Phoebe Clark, Kaley Waterman, Hanna Moriarty, and Morin each scooped up six ground balls. Moriarty recorded the loss in goal while tallying 15 saves.
Next, the Royals will travel to face Mercyhurst College on March 12th at noon. The game will be played at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md.
