Royals pick up sixth win in a row

The Royals defeated Wingate 14-11.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte Men's Lacrosse Team turned a 4-4 tie into a six-goal advantage en route to a 14-11 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The Royals, ranked number eight in this week's USILA NCAA Division II top 10 poll, improve to 6-1 overall with their sixth straight victory. Wingate is 4-6 overall after picking up its third loss in a row.

Queens started quickly, bolting to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Junior attack Brian Rose (Stony Point, N.Y., North Rockland) had two of the first three goals for the Royals. Wingate attack Colin O'Donoghue got the Bulldogs on the board with an unassisted goal at the 4:07 mark of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon) put the Royals up 4-1 at the 13:18 mark. Wingate responded with three unanswered goals to tie the contest at 4-4. Derek Watts  of the Bulldogs concluded the flurry with an unassisted goal at the 5:17 plateau.

Queens answered by scoring seven of the next eight goals to take an 11-5 lead with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter. Six different players scored goals during the game-changing run. Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads) scored the game-winner with 3:19 to go in the second frame. Geroy had two goals in the run. Whaley and Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton) contributed one goal and one assist each in Queens' flurry.

The Royals were outshot 45-to-23. Joe Taylor (Aurburn, N.Y., Auburn) won 13 of the 22 face-offs he took.

Rose led Queens with two goals and three assists for five points. Four Royals had two goals each.

David Lee of Wingate had four goals to lead the Bulldogs. Taylor Womble added two goals for the visitors. 

Queens goalkeeper Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) picked up the victory after recording 14 saves and only allowing eight goals in 56-plus minutes. Bulldog junior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima took the loss. He surrendered eight goals and notched three saves in 31-plus minutes.  

Queens will next take on Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 4:30 pm at the Queens Sports Complex.
