Queens falls to New Haven

The Royals were defeated 14-5 by the Chargers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Royals fell 14-5 this afternoon at the hands of the University of New Haven Chargers in women's lacrosse action. The non-conference loss drops the Royals record to 4-5 overall as the Chargers remain undefeated this season at 2-0.

Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva) put the Royals on the board at 23:55 after the Chargers opened up play with two early goals. Queens was cold for the remainder of the period not seeing another point until Caitlin Miller (Bethany Beach, Del., Worcester Prep) notched a Queens goal with just over a minute left in the half. New Haven had put together an eight-to-zero run before Miller's goal making the score 10-2 at the break.

Alexis Gabbe led the Chargers with four goals going in to the locker room.

New Haven jumped out early in the second half scoring four straight goals extending its lead to 12, 14-2. Paige Fisher broke up the Charger scoring with an unassisted goal at 15:53. Queens would hold the Chargers scoreless for the next 12 minutes opening the window for a comeback but the Royals weren't able to connect on any shots either as time fell on New Haven's side.

Queens would close the game with two more goals making the score 14-5 at the sound of the final horn.

The Royals collected 39 ground balls in the loss to New Haven's 32, while the Chargers possessed 12 draw controls to Queens' nine.

Martin led the Royals with two goals. Emily Balmer (Damascus, Md., Damascus) collected seven ground balls while Akasha Kasper (Greensboro, N.C., Western Guilford) scooped up five in addition to leading the team with four draw controls. Allie Rhodes (Davidsonville, Md., South River) led all players with five caused turnovers.

Gabbe led the Chargers with six goals as Natalie Lieberman recorded a hat trick. Lieberman also notched five draw controls. Goalkeeper Maureen Spellman led her team with seven ground balls. Spellman also tallied 10 saves in goal.

The Royals have a few days off before returning to the field to host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on March 23rd at 6:30 pm.
