Royals win big in home opener

Women’s lacrosse wins 21-3.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East)Paige Fisher (Schwenksville, Pa., Perkiomen Valley), and Emily Balmer (Damascus, Md., Damascus) each netted three goals today as Queens University of Charlotte cruised to a 21-3 victory over the visiting Lees-McRae College Bobcats. The Royals are now 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action and 2-0 overall. The Bobcats open their season at 0-1.

The Royals dominated play on both ends of the field today against the Bobcats. Queens' high intense, pressure defense forced Lees-McRae into 24 turnovers, while the offense took 46 total shots compared to the Bobcats' eight. Queens tallied 20 draw controls and scooped up 41 ground balls as a team.

Queens opened the game pouring in eight goals before the Bobcats got on the board on a goal scored by Ellie Psillas at 11:23. Philip scored all three of her goals during the Royals 8-0 run. The Royals would see four more goals before the break making the score 12-2 at the half.

In the second half, Queens reeled off nine straight goals running away with the game. Lees-McRae's sole goal of the half came with 26 seconds left to play on a man-up opportunity.

Philip led the Royals with five points today on three goals and two assists. Caitlin Miller (Bethany Beach, Del., Worcester Prep)Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva)Arika Zimmerman (Fulton, Md., Reservoir), and Jessica Rooney (Orlando, Fla., Timber Creek) each scored two goals. Elizabeth Janaskie (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) and Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) collected five groundballs apiece. Akasha Kasper (Greensboro, N.C., Western Guilford) totaled six draw controls.

Psillas led the Bobcats with three goals while Laura Hawthrone scored one.

The Royals will return to the field to face Pfeiffer University on Saturday, February 26th in a game slated to begin at 11 am.
