CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The wait is over and the Queens University of Charlotte 2001 softball season has finally begun. With no chances of rain on the radar, the Royals welcomed non-conference contender Georgia College (1-3) to Park Road Park. The Royals (1-1) were looking to continue the success of last season which ended in a Carolina Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament Championship berth.
The Royals had a little rust to dust off dropping the opening game 8-0 (5), but rebounding 7-5 in the night cap.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va,, JR Tucker ) led the charge for Queens going 3-4 on the night including two homeruns. Senior
Brandy Jester (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) was 2-4 on the night and earned the win in the second game.
Queens makes a quick turn and travels to Carson-Newman on Sunday for a 2pm first pitch.
Game 1; Queens 0, Georgia College 8
The first game did not go in Queens' favor. The Royals only managed to get two hits in five innings while the Bobcats connected 10 times for eight runs. Haley Burnett led the rally for Georgia College with two homeruns and four RBI in the game.
Junior
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) takes the opening loss while Sabrina Chandler picks up Georgia College's first win of the year.
Game 2; Queens 7, Georgia College 5
The weather may have been cold, but the Royals were hot in game 2.
Cheek had a break out performance homering in her first two plate appearances of the game. During game one she was walked twice. Cheek finished the game going 3-4 with four RBI. She had a single shot in the second inning to give Queens a 2-1 lead then stepped up again in the next inning. This time she hit a three-run bomb to give Queens a 5-1 lead.
The Royals gave the start to Jester in the circle for the second game. Jester pitched a complete game posting eight K's and giving up six hits. She was 1-2 with an RBI during the game.
The Bobcats scored two in the top of the fourth and another two in the top of the fifth, but Queens answered back with two in the bottom of the fifth.
Chelsie Huffman took the loss for the Bobcats in the second game.
