CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With only three home games left between now and winter break, the final days in the legendary Ovens Athletic Center are quickly approaching. The men will take on Davis & Elkins College on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 p.m. for their final competition in “The Oven,” while the women will play Barber Scotia on Wednesday, December 7 at 6 p.m.
With so many great memories in the beloved facility referred to as “the best Rocky Balboa training facility” by Queens' Director of Athletics,
Jeannie King, the demolishment of the facility, which has housed basketball, volleyball, tennis and swimming since 1954, will be bitter sweet.
Taking the place of Ovens will be the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation. The building will be named for Leon and Sandra Levine who awarded a generous donation from the
The Leon Levine Foundation.
At Tuesday night's game, the Levine groundbreaking ceremony will take place during halftime. President Pamela Davies alongside King and the Levines will display a symbolic groundbreaking demonstration at the culmination of the halftime celebration.
After the women's basketball game on Wednesday night, the Royals will make the Grady Cole Center their home for the next year and a half as the construction of the Levine Center will not be complete until July 2013.
The women also have a home game tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against Livingstone College.
