Play Together, Stay Together: The Levine Center

April 23, 2009: Another Levine Gift (From The Charlotte Observer)

The Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation will be one of the main activity centers on campus, adding to the vibrancy of campus.  The three-story, 140,000 square-foot building will replace the existing Ovens Athletic Center, with one of the new build's levels created below-ground. In addition to providing major new facilities for wellness, recreational and athletic activities, it will serve as a hub of campus life.

The Levine Center will be home to the Athletic and Physical Education departments. This provides a tremendous upgrade for competitive athletics as student athletes will benefit from a varsity weight room, training room, trophy room, classrooms, and conference space, as well as well-appointed locker rooms for the Royals home teams, and visiting teams.

One of the many exciting features of the new facility will be a performance gym with three basketball courts side-by-side with moveable walls and retractable bleachers that will allow the space to be configured to suit specific events.

We are also thrilled to add an aquatic center here, with a stretch pool with moveable bulkhead.  It will be used by the men's and women's swim teams, physical education swim instruction and recreational swimming.  This will be a huge boost for our swim teams and swimming club.

In addition, the Levine Center will include a fully equipped fitness center. Other features include a three-lane indoor walking track, weight room, and studios for dance and group fitness classes. These features will transform physical education and recreational athletics at Queens.

The building will be named for Leon and Sandra Levine by a generous donation from the The Leon Levine Foundation.
