Queens sweeps Crusaders

Queens won 3-0.

BELMONT, N.C. – The Royals traveled to Belmont Abbey College this afternoon playing their second game in as many days sweeping the Crusaders by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-18. With the win, Queens University of Charlotte improves to 14-7 on the season and 8-2 in the league, while the Crusaders fall to 12-11 on the year and 7-5 in conference play.

The Royals created space between themselves and the Crusaders pushing four points after a 7-7 tie in the first set of the match. The small run forced Belmont Abbey to call a timeout. The stoppage stalled Queens for a short time before the Royals scored six more points to go up19-10. Attack errors helped the Crusaders get back in the game as they equalized the set at 22-22. A block and two kills would end the set in Queens' favor. Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) and Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) tallied the kills while Harvey and Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, Ohio, McNicholls) notched the block assist.

The Crusaders opened the second set on a 5-2 run before a kill by Ashley Winters sparked a 6-2 run putting Queens up one point, 8-7. Belmont Abbey responded with a run of their own in route to a 15-11 lead. Jamie O'Connell collected two kills during the run. The Royals had an answer once again roaring back forcing four ties before taking the set 25-21.

Queens had complete control of the final set building a 22-11 lead. The Crusaders made a final push for five points closing the margin to six, 22-16. However, Queens' Moore put down a ball switching the momentum back to Queens' attack as they closed the match with kills from Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) and Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory).

Kemp led the Royals today with seven kills, while Gibbs and Harvey notched six kills apiece. Moore and Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) dished out 14 and 11 assists, respectively. Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) collected 12 digs leading the defensive effort alongside Harvey who led in blocks with six.

Angela Jubb led the Crusaders with a game-high 13 kills on offense. Molly Gwaltney led all players with 22 assists. On the defensive end Lydia Schellenberg led Belmont Abbey with 13 digs.

Queens will return to the court on Tuesday, October 18 in The Oven against Barton College at 6:30 pm.
