Royals pick up double OT win over Crusaders

The Royals defeated the Crusaders 2-1.

BELMONT, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte scored a breakaway goal in the 108th minute solidifying a 2-1 double overtime win over Belmont Abbey College this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win improves Queens to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in Conference Carolinas as they complete the week undefeated, while dropping the Crusaders to 5-8-1 overall and 3-5 in Conference Carolinas.

The first half was scoreless and very physical, as five yellow cards were issued in the first 45 minutes

Queens got on the board first in the 80th minute as Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Candido Portinari) finished unassisted for Queens in the 67th minute giving them a 1-0 edge. His goal came after his first shot was knocked away by Abbey goalkeeper Sergio Ramirez, but the ball came right back to Netto's feet, who one-timed the finish.

Twelve minutes later the score was evened due to a Queens own goal. Abbey defender Tom Wigley deposited a long throw in from the left sideline, which landed onto the head of a Queens defender just to the left of the goal. He headed backwards in an attempt to clear, but his effort sailed backwards and into the right corner of the net for the score.

Neither team scored again until the 108th minute when Netto ran down a long pass from the Queens box, dribbled from midfield until he beat two Crusader defenders in front of the box and blasted a shot past Ramirez for the winner.

The Royals will return to the field on Tuesday at 7:30 pm to face Lenoir Rhyne University, while also celebrating Senior Night.
