MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte traveled to play rival Pfeiffer University this evening losing 73-64 to the Falcons. This is the Royals' second loss in a row and their second loss in Conference Carolinas action.
This is the first time that the Falcons have beaten Queens since the 2008-2009 season when they edged the Royals out by one point, 79-78.
Tonight's loss drops the Royals (4-2, 5-7) down to fourth place in the conference. Pfeiffer (3-4, 4-9) now sits in sixth.
The Falcons appeared to have the luck of the draw in the first half of play shooting nearly 60 percent from the field while the Royals struggled shooting 26.7 percent. Putting together a string of runs throughout the period, Pfeiffer found itself with a 15 point lead at the break.
Queens returned to the court the second half with better accuracy outscoring the Falcons by six, 39-33. The Royals got as close as 12 to the home team a few times in the period, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
A couple of Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) free-throws brought Queens to within nine, 70-61, of Pfeiffer with 54 seconds on the clock. A series of fouls soon followed sending the Falcons to the line to net three more points giving them a 12 point lead. Jessica Lewis (Hampton, Va., Bethel) sunk a three bringing the Royals to within nine with four seconds left. After a Queens timeout, the Falcons inbounded and held the ball for the final ticks.
Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) led the Royals with 19 points. Hudley was 7-8 from the free-throw line and is now shooting 91.7 percent from the line this season. Lewis scored 15 points and Battle finished with 14. The Royals only committed nine turnovers tonight.
Leading the Falcons was Christina Harvey with 25 points and nine rebounds. Domonique China scored 15 points and Shelley Reese scored 11.
The Royals will travel for their third away game in a row to face Barton College who is ranked first in Conference Carolinas. The game will be on Tuesday, January 18th at 5:30 pm.
