Men's soccer wins big in season opener

The Royals defeated the Wolves 4-1.

NEWBERRY, S.C. -  Queens University of Charlotte opened up their season with a bang downing Newberry College 4-1 in an away game Friday afternoon.

The Royals jumped ahead early after a quick unassisted goal by Yannick Fischbach (Simpsonville, S.C., J.L. Mann) found the back of the net in the 19th minute.

Wolves senior forward Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) then knocked in his first goal of the year, a game tying shot, early in the second half to knot things up in the 68th minute, putting the Wolves back in contention.

Queens (1-0-0) responded shortly thereafter with a Bryan White (Albany, N.Y., Bethlehem Central) breakaway goal that snuck past Newberry goalie Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) to give the Royals the lead for good.

Queens went on to add two more goals, one in the 74th minute by Gersi Cilingiri (Jacksonville, Fla., Wolfson) and the last in the 84th minute by Joshua Dowd (Houston, Texas, James E. Taylor) to put the match away.

Fischbach led the Royals in shots with five, four on goal, on the afternoon. Four other Royals were right behind him with three apiece.

Arroyo led the Wolves with his four shots including one on goal while teammate Justin Blomdahl took three shots and two on target.

Royals goalie Giancarlo Aristondo (Charlotte, N.C., South Mecklenburg) tallied seven saves while Johnson of Newberry blocked nine shots on goal taken by Queens.

Queens will be back in action Tuesday, September 7, as they travel to Mars Hill College.
