CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The men's soccer team of Queens University of Charlotte was shocked tonight in a rival match-up by Belmont Abbey College. The Royals entered tonight's game with a 3-1 conference record falling to the Crusaders 3-1. Belmont Abbey improves to 3-4-2 overall (2-1-1 CC) while Queens drops to 4-4 on the season (3-2 CC).
The Royals seemed to have control of the game after an early goal scored by Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior) a little over two minutes into the game. Chambers re-collected a shot he had taken and fired it once again succeeding on finding the back of the net. Queens held on to their lead for the entire first half.
Queens' defense continued to hold off the Crusaders from scoring blocking a number of shots in the second half. Belmont Abbey tied the game up when Stuart Kirk crossed a ball into the box from the right side. Ross Smith scored the goal at 62:02 giving the game a score of 1-1.
A little over two minutes later Maurico Lopez scored a goal after receiving a through ball from Gianluca D'Agata. Lopez got past the Royals defense and was one on one with goalkeeper Simen Walmann (Nevlunghavn, NORWAY, Toppidrettsgymnaset). He shot the ball past Walmann giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
A goal in the 88th minute by Jose Penaloza secured the win for Belmont Abbey.
Walmann finished the game with seven saves.
Queens will travel to face Erskine College Saturday at 3:30p.m.
