CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Senior Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper ) netted five goals and tallied five assists for ten points in a win this evening against Converse College. Queens University of Charlotte defeated the Valkyries by a score of 19-13 improving their conference record to 3-1 (5-8 overall). Converse falls to 1-3 with the loss (4-9 overall).
Queens struggled getting in to a scoring rhythm in the first half of play as Converse had a 5-1 lead with 15:33 on the clock. Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) helped switch the momentum in the Royals' favor netting two goals back-to-back bringing the Valkyries to within three, 8-5. After Converse's final goal of the half scored by Bridget Dullea, Queens went on a three-to-zero run to close the half down by one, 9-8.
The Royals opened the second half of play on fire going on a six-to-zero run. Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) tied the game up at nine just under 24 minutes. Not a minute later Duffey scored her second goal of the game giving the Royals the lead for good,10-9. Queens had scored nine unanswered goals between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second before Converse answered. The Valkyries tried to make a run tallying three goals over a four minute span, but Queens had full control of the game. Philip broke up the visitor's run at 8:44 recording her third goal of the game. The Royals scored four more goals to Converse's one ending the game with a margin of six.
The Royals won 20 of the 33 draw controls in this evening's game. They also outshot the Valkyries 45-34.
The Royals attack was well spread as Philip scored four goals and Casey recorded a hat trick in addition to Duffey's efforts. Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) and Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) also chipped in two apiece. Philip and Paige Fisher (Schwenksville, Pa., Perkiomen Valley) led with four ground balls each. Philip also led with five draw controls. Kristi Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Winter Springs), Caitlin Flanagan (West Islip, N.Y., West Islip), and Casey each had two caused turnovers as well. Goalkeeper Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ) recorded 18 saves in the win.
Converse was led by Dullea's six goals. Lacy Bevilacqua had six points with three goals and three assists. Brianna Hoffman rounded out the Valkyries scoring with two goals. Molly Donaghue tallied 18 saves in the loss.
Queens will travel to play rival Belmont Abbey College on Saturday, April 10th at 12 p.m.
