CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Corey Geroy's (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads) six-point day clinched the two-seed in the Conference Carolinas tournament for the ninth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, as they defeated Lees-McRae College, 15-5, Thursday afternoon at Tate Field. The Royals improve to 4-1 (9-3) in the conference, while the Bobcats fall to 0-5 (3-7).
Queens came out of the gate swinging, notching the first seven goals of the game. The Royals scored a pair of goals 47 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead with 5:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Alex Wesenberg (Bloominton, Minn., Jefferson) would add to the lead with 32 seconds remaining on a feed from
Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton) to take the Royals into the second quarter with a 3-0 advantage.
Wesenberg,
Brian Masterson (Toledo, Ohio, St. John's Jesuit),
T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon), and
B.J. Leighton (Apex, NC, Apex) continued Queens' first-half dominance, notching goals to pull away 7-0. It wasn't until the 2:50 mark that Brett Yusiewicz put the Bobcats on the board. With
Mike Delallo (Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee) (slashing) and Wesenberg (offside) in the penalty box, Yusiewicz struck again at 2:17 to bring Lees-McRae within five. The Royals would respond late in the half on a Whaley-to-Masterson goal to take an 8-2 lead into the break.
Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) and Geroy quickly expanded the Royals lead in the second half, scoring goals to put Queens up 10-2 in the first two minutes of action. Landon Young shook up a stagnate 10-minute stretch with the final goal of the third quarter to cut the Royals' lead to seven going into the fourth.
The Royals continued to dominate the Bobcats, scoring four unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter. A pair from Baker, followed by
Joe Taylor's (Aurburn, N.Y., Auburn) fourth goal of the year padded Queens' lead to 14-3. A pair of late Bobcat goals and a power-play goal from Boyle rounded out the scoring for the afternoon.
Queens' dominance on the field was reflected in the statistics, as the Royals held an advantage in nearly every category.
The Royals' season-long advantage in circle held true Thursday, as they won 16-of-24 face offs to control the ball and ultimately assume a 43-32 advantage in shots.
Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) played the first 40 minutes to earn the win, allowing two goals while collecting eight saves before being replaced by
Rob Bacharach (Baltimore, Md., Dulaney). Bacharach collected eight saves in his relief effort.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Royals shift their focus to the Conference Carolinas tournament held at Queens Sports Complex from April 23-25.
