Charlotte, N.C.- Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper ) tallied two goals and six assists for a total of eight points in this morning's game as the Royals fell to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University in overtime 14-13. With the non-conference loss, Queens University of Charlotte falls to 2-4 on the year while East Stroudsburg opens their season at 1-0.
With a fast break up the field, it looked as if the Royals would tie the game up again in overtime. Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) caused a turnover on the defensive end and made a break for it. Duffey had a look at the goal to score, but goal keeper Amanda Simms of the Warriors came up with the save as the seconds ticked off the clock. Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) scored the lone goal in overtime for the Royals giving Duffey her sixth assist of the game.
Duffey was the first player to get the Royals on the board making the score 3-1 after three unanswered goals by the Warriors. East Stroudsburg kept finding the back of the net in the first half until the momentum switched in favor of Queens. A goal by Kristi Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Winter Springs) off a feed from Paige Fisher (Schwenksville, Pa., Perkiomen Valley) sparked a four-zero scoring run by the home team bringing them within one point of the Warriors. With less than three minutes in the half, East Stroudsburg scored two more goals to close the half up by three, 9-6.
Fouls in the first half by Queens led the Warriors to capitalizing on four of five free-position-shots.
Queens came out of halftime on fire scoring three unanswered goals within a minute. Philip led the scoring run getting the ball pass Warriors goalie, Amanda Simms, twice.Alison Doron ( Zionsville, Ind., Zionsville ) brought the Royals to within one goal when she scored the third point of the run, 10-9. O'Hara broke up the Royals momentum with a goal assisted by Michelle Mangiaruga with 17:24 on the clock.
The Royals continued their attack to stay in the game as Duffey scored her second goal of the game bringing Queens within one for the second time in the game. With 9:51 on the clock, Enna Saffos (Centerville, Md., Queen Anne) whipped the ball in to the cage to tie the game up at 11. Duffey was awarded the assists on the play. Not a minute later, Lindsey Moyer of East Stroudsburg scored to give her team the lead again. Queens didn't back down though as Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) sent the game into overtime with a goal at the 8:08 mark.
Queens outshot East Stroudsburg 39-35 in the game. The Royals also controlled the draw winning 16 of 31. Philip recorded four goals, four ground balls, and three draw controls in the game. Kemp had two goals, two ground balls, and four draw controls. Saffos also scored two goals. Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ), Allie Rhodes (Davidsonville, Md., South River), and Barnwell each had two caused turnovers on the defensive end. Goalie Markle recorded 14 saves.
O'Hara led the Warriors with four goals while Jamie Wesztergom chipped in three. Laura Riegel and Wesztergom each tallied six ground balls. Wesztergom also went a perfect 3-3 on free-position-shots and had three caused turnovers.
The Royals are back in action Wednesday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. in a home game against Lock Haven University who is ranked third in the country.
