CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Both Queens tennis programs had big days Sunday afternoon, as the women's team upset 42-ranked Erskine 5-4 while the men's team breezed by the Flying Fleet 9-0.
The women's team came in tied with Erskine for first place in Conference Carolinas action. The Royals got off to a rough start, losing two-of-three doubles matches, including their top two flights.
Down 1-4, Queens rallied around their lower flights as No. 3
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding), No. 4
Christina Engelberth (Stockholm, Sweden, Pendleton School IMG), and No. 6
Kaitlyn Blakey (Keller, Tex., Keller) all picked up wins, combining to take 36 of the 53 games.
The climax of the afternoon came during No. 4
Morgan Roberts' (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) match, as she outlasted the Flying Fleets Victoria Stephens 7-6, (9-7), 7-6, (7-3) to clinch the Royals 10th consecutive win.
Queens improves to 5-0 (10-0) in the conference and gains sole possession of first place.
The men's team improved to 2-2 in the conference and 6-2 overall with their 9-0 dismantling of Erskine. Queens' No. 1
Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) came on strong after losing the first set 1-6 to Erskine's Nemanja Brcan, winning the final two sets to take the match 2-1.
Lee-Daigle teamed up with
Raahil Dhruva (London, England, Parmiter's) to pick up a win as Queens' No. 1 doubles team, defeating Caleb Barnes and Fabio Ciarrocchi. No. 5
Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario) and No. 6
Christopher Kennedy (Colorado Springs, Co., TCA) each picked up wins in extra sets.
Both Royals teams will be back in action Sunday, March 21 when they travel to Coker College for a 12:30 p.m. match.
