Royals 2-0 in conference play

Queens defeated St. Andrews 15-12.

LAURINBURG, N.C.— Senior Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper )and sophomore Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) helped the Royals (4-7 Overall, 2-0) remain undefeated in league play with seven points apiece today as Queens University of Charlotte defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian College 15-12 this afternoon. Philip scored a game-high four goals and added three assists while Duffey had a hat trick and four helpers. St. Andrews falls to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas play.

Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes on tallies by sophomore Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll) and Philip. Kim McDaniel responded for St. Andrews with a pair of goals in a 90 second span to knot the score for the only time at 2-2. Queens regained the lead for good with five unanswered goals by a quintet of Royals over an eight minute span. After two more Knights goals, Philip scored the final goal of the first half in the last minute to extend the Royals lead to four, 8-4, at halftime.

Casey had both of her goals and her assist in the first half.

Queens looked to put the strangle hold on St. Andrews after the intermission, outscoring the Knights five-to-one over the first 20 minutes of the second half to take its biggest lead of the day at 13-5. However, a junior Brett Vyverberg free-position goal with 9:21 remaining sparked a comeback attempt that was highlighted by a trio of goals in the 55th minute for the Knights.

Sophomore Chelsea Ross capped a seven-to-one run by the Knights with an unassisted goal with 78 seconds ticks to go that got St. Andrews to within two (14-12). Queens held the Knights off as freshman Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) won the ensuing draw control, and Queens maintained possession for majority of the final minute. After a yellow card in the final seconds, freshman Caitlin Miller (Ocean View, Del., Worcester Prep) put the exclamation point on the Royals win with a goal with three-tenths of a second on the clock.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ) made 14 saves to earn the win in net for Queens. Morgan Achilles made twelve saves for the Knights.

Queens held a 39-34 shot edge while St. Andrews scooped up six more ground balls, 29-23. Both teams won 14 draw controls and committed 22 turnovers.

Junior Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) matched Casey with two goals and one assist. A quartet of Royals scored one goal including Miller, Barnwell, Alison Doron ( Zionsville, Ind., Zionsville ), and Kelly Walsh (Pawley's Island, S.C., Waccamaw). Junior Elizabeth Janaskie (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) also found the scorebook with an assist on Miller's last second tally.

Junior Kim McDaniel and freshman Megan Jolly both recorded hat tricks. Jolly had a team-high five points with two assists. Knights' freshman Victoria Bickett and sophomore Anna Egeln both had one goal and one assist for the hosts. Ross rattled home two goals while junior Allie Faulhaber chipped in with one goal.

Queens will host league rival and fourth-ranked Limestone College on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Queens Sports Complex.
