Men's Lacrosse top St. Andrews, 8-4, to win seventh straight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Making his third start consecutive start, freshman Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md., Calverton) continued to impress as he added two goals in No. 9  Queens University of Charlotte's 8-4 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at Queens Sports Complex. Earning their seventh consecutive win, the Royals improve to 3-0 (7-1 overall) and remain the top seed in the Conference Carolinas. The loss drops the Knights to 1-2 (2-8), tied for fourth in the conference.

Queens got off to a quick start with David Weise (Chesapeake Beach, Md. , Huntingtown) putting the Royals up 1-0 just 1:06 into the game. The remainder of the first quarter was stagnate, as the teams combined to register only three shots on goal.

The Royals kicked their offense into gear at the 10:37 mark when Brian Masterson (Toledo, Ohio, St. John's Jesuit) found Baker to put Queens up 2-0. A trio of Royals followed Baker's lead, scoring goals in the subsequent three minutes. Alex Warehime (Millersville, Md., Old Mill ) and Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads) tallied goals before Alex Wesenberg (Bloominton, Minn., Jefferson) capped the onslaught with an unassisted goal at 7:21. Following Wesenberg's goal, the Knights replaced goalkeeper Kyle Davitt in favor of Patrick Wade. Wade stopped the bleeding, as the Royals failed to add to their lead, settling for a 5-0 lead at the break.

The Knights and Kyle Carnaggio came out of the break strong, scoring just 1:08 into the half. The Royals answered 15 seconds later with Baker's second goal of the game for a 6-1 lead. Carnaggio and George Pugh added a pair of goals to bring the Royals within three goals going into the fourth quarter.

Protecting a 6-3 lead, the fourth quarter turned into a defensive struggle. With each goalkeeper keeping the opposition honest, they tallied a combined 10 saves in the quarter. With 6:39 remaining, Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) and Wesenberg netted goals 40 seconds apart to add some insurance. Riley Fink added a goal with 18 seconds remaining before the Royals ran out the clock for the victory.

Goalkeeper Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) played a strong game, collecting 14 of the 18 shots on goal faced to earn the win. The Knights' Davitt is credited with the loss, totaling just four saves and five goals against in over 22 minutes of action. Wade tallied 14 saves with three goals against during his stint.

With both teams committing over 20 turnovers, the Royals were able to find an advantage on neutral balls -- collecting 42 of the games 70 ground balls.

The Royals were able to take advantage on one-of-three extra-attacker opportunities, while they frustrated their opposition defensively, holding them scoreless in six opportunities.

Queens is back in action Wednesday, March 31st when they welcome conference-rival No. 4 Limestone College to Queens Sports Complex for a 6:00 p.m. showdown.
