Royals drop two to tenth-ranked Augusta State

Softball drops two in non-conference action.

Augusta, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team dropped two to the Jaguars of Augusta State University this afternoon in an away game at Jaguar Field. Augusta State is currently ranked tenth in the nation. The Royals dropped the first game 1-0 at the bottom of the seventh to a walk off homer. In the second game, the Jaguars scored two unearned runs to take the win.

The Royals dropped to 15-16 on the season, while Augusta State improved to 30-10 on the year.

Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive ) paced the team offensively with three hits and the Royals only RBI. Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ), Megan Rollins (Salem, Ore., South Salem), and Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) each had two hits on the afternoon.

Game 1

The game was scoreless untill the seventh inning. The Royals had a chance to score with the bases loaded as Maria Goode stepped up to the plate. Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) had singled to second base. Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) followed her with a double to left field. After Brandy Jester (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) got the second out of the inning, Megan Rollins singled with a bunt. Goode was at bat to bring in a run, but was struck out swinging. The Jaguars won when Kacee Camp hit a homerun to lead the Jags to a 1-0 victory.

Chantel Dodge was credited with the loss giving up three hits in the game dropping her record to 10-6 on the year. Dodge struck out three batters.

Sara DuMuth of Augusta State, improving to 13-4 on the season, earned the win in game one.

Game 2 

In the first inning, Kacey Sims of Augusta State scored an unearned run on a wild pitch.

Kacee Camp of the Jaguars scored the second unearned run in the fourth inning. Laura Brown was credited with the RBI.

The Royals earned a run in the sixth inning. Megan Campbell got the RBI when she hit the ball into centerfield bringing Goode home. Queens had their last chance to score in the top of the seventh, but couldn't connect on any hits.

Brandy Jester dropped her record to 5-9 with the loss. Jester gave up three hits and two runs on the day. She struck out five batters.

Augusta State's Emily Corish earned the win in game two and improved to 12-4 overall. Corish gave up one run on six hits and struck out six batters in 6.0 innings of work. Kimberly Kennedy relieved Corish in the seventh and earned her fourth save of the season. 

Queens travels to Gaffney, S.C., on Sunday to play Limestone College at 1:00 p.m.
