Women’s lacrosse participating in Lax 4 Life

This initiative benefits the Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team is set to participate in Lax 4 Life, which benefits the Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation, in a home event on March 26th against Dowling College and in an away game on March 28th against St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

“When I first heard about this Memorial Foundation I knew right away it was a foundation in which our program wanted to be involved.”, said Head Coach Meghan Dennehy. “This hits close to home as members on our team have been affect by suicide, and we are willing to do whatever we can to help increase the awareness of adolescent suicide.“

The Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation was created to increase awareness of adolescent suicides and help identify adolescents at risk. Green was a sophomore at West Chester Henderson High School when she committed suicide in 2006. Her older sister, Mary Beth Green, was the goalkeeper at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. The women's lacrosse teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference started Lax 4 Life last year and their efforts have expanded to include NCAA Division II teams across the nation.

Earlier this year the Royals participated in the Out of the Darkness community walk at Freedom Park to help raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Queens' lacrosse player Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva) had a close friend commit suicide in 2009, and the community walk and Lax 4 Life are ways to help prevent others from having to suffer the loss she and many others have endured.

“I think Lax 4 Life is a great way to express the concern that people have about suicide and its prevention,” said Martin. “Suicide has an overwhelming effect on a multitude of people and it's something that cannot be taken lightly. Raising the awareness through a sport that involves so much passion will hopefully relay that message to the value we can all place on life.”

The women's lacrosse team will be wearing t-shirts made in honor of the Lax 4 Life and the Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation during warm-ups before each game and they will be collecting money to benefit the effort to increase suicide awareness in youth.
