Softball wins two over Lees-McRae

Queens continues conference play Sunday against Mount Olive

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- On a beautiful first day of spring, the Queens softball team spoiled the afternoon for the visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats with a two-game Conference Carolinas sweep. Queens (12-14/5-1CC) won the first game soundly with a no-hitter from Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) for a final score of 3-0 while the second took eight innings for the Royals to win 6-5.

In addition to Dodge's no-hitter, her second in as many weeks, she also came in during the second game and picked up the win.

Queens was strong offensively against the Bobcats (8-14/2-2 CC). Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st) led the team at the plate hitting 2-3 in each game, including one double.  The Royals hit one homerun in each game, the first from the bat of Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive) and the second from Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) in game two.

The win extends the Royals win-streak to four, all of which are conference wins. The Royals will look to keep that streak alive on Sunday, March 21 as they host Mount Olive College at 1pm.

Game One
Queens opened the game up scoring two runs in the first inning. Bowman hit a triple then scored the opening run of the game on a throwing error by the Bobcats. Turner followed the triple with her own double, scoring off of a Campbell single.

Campbell opened the fourth with her third homer of the season giving Queens the 3-0 lead and eventual win.

Dodge struck out seven and only walked two. Strong defense behind her kept the no-hitter going.

Game Two
Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) led off with a single and Bowman earner her fifth and sixth RBI's of the season with a two-run shot to give Queens a 2-0 lead.

Pitcher Brandy Jester (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) started strong, striking out four of the opening six batters and giving up one hit in the two-inning stretch. In the third Lees-McRae dialed Jester in and was able to score five to take a 5-2 lead. The batters strung four singles together and a fielder's choice to get one across the plate while the Royals defense got Ashley Benfield out at home on the fielder's choice. The Bobcats scored five runs on six hits and Queens closed the inning stranding two on base.

With two outs, Goode reached first on an error and Bowman came to the plate with runners on the corners. Bowman singled, picked up her third RBI of the game and was able to advance to second on the throw. With two in scoring position Turner singled, droving in Goode for the game-tying run.

It would be a stalemate for the rest of regulation with each team recording just one hit in innings five-seven.

The Bobcats went down 1-2-3 in the extra inning with two pop-ups and on strike out.

Jester led off for the Royals and perfectly placed a bunt to reach first and advance Dodge to third. Jester stole second on the next play, her second stolen base of the season. Goode singled to bring Dodge around for the game-winning run.

Jester pitched three innings and struck out four batters and gave up seven hits. Dodge finished the game and struck out five batters in her five innings while giving up two hits.
