CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens softball team finished off the Saint Andrews Knights in five innings by scores of 8-0 in each of the two games tonight at Park Road Park. The twin bill win is the first sweep of a Conference Carolinas opponent this season and improves Queens to 3-1 in league play and 10-14 overall. The Knights fall to 0-4 in conference action and 3-23 for the year.
Conference Carolina's player and pitcher of the week,
Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive) and
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee), each hit one out of the park in the victories. Dodge was 2-2 in each game.
Dodge was the starting pitcher in the first game, giving up four hits and striking out eight.
Brandy Jester started the second game and gave up just one hit while also striking out eight batters.
Game One
Campbell got the first inning started off with a bang. With two on, she hit her second homer of the year to give Queens an early 3-0 jump on the Knights.
Queens added two more runs in the second, this time starting with a double by Dodge. Dodge would eventually score the first run of the inning. The second run came as
Megan Rollins (Salem, Ore., South Salem), who was hit by a pitch then stole second, stole home to give the Royals a five run edge.
Saint Andrews got their first hit of the game in the third, but couldn't get a play developed to post runs on the scoreboard.
Alisha Waldrop (McDonough, GA , Luella) led the fourth with a double and was brought home off the bat of
Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence).
Goode would also drive in the last run of the game, this time Dodge, to bring the game to a close after five innings.
Game Two
The Royals used a two-run and two three-run innings to pick up the 8-0 win.
Dodge still had a hot bat in the second game, hitting a double in her first at-bat. Dodge drove in
Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) for the first run of the game. Jester picked up her 10
th RBI of the season as Dodge scored off a single to left center field.
Dodge earned all three RBIs in the fourth inning on a three-run homer putting Queens up 5-0. For the game she ended up collecting five of seven RBIs.
The final three runs came with the help of Saint Andrew's pitcher Ashley Disque.
Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) singled off of a bunt, then Disque would walk the next three batters, forcing Bowman home. Jester kept the bases loaded after reaching on an error by the shortstop and picking up another run. One more walk would bring the eighth run across the plate and end the game.
