CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte softball knew they would have their hands full against No. 2 North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga., Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Saints overpowered Queens in both games by scores of 12-1 (5 innings) and 9-1 (6 innings).
The loss drops the Royals to 4-11 while the Saints improve to 13-0, their best start in school history.
On the day Queens had four hits from four different players. Pitchers Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) and Brandy Jester (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) each started one game.
The Royals look to rebound from the losses on March 4 at Pfeiffer. The contest marks the first Conference Carolinas game of the 2010 campaign.
Game One
The Saints started the first game of the day with a six run first inning. The first hit of the game came with North Georgia's clean-up batter Leslee Smith, but two runners were already on. From the Smith single, the Saints strung together three more hits and a Queens error led to the 6-0 run.
North Georgia scored three runs in the next two innings, going up 12-0.
The Royals connected for the first time in the fourth when Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) singled. Bowman get to scoring position by stealing second on the next play, the next three batters were each put out.
Dodge scored the single Royals run of the game in the fifth. She combined her single with smart base running to round the bases. After advancing to second on an Anna Weavil (Kernersville, N.C., Glenn) groundout, Dodge took advantage of two wild pitches by Sarah Phillips to take third and then score.
Dodge threw all four innings for Queens giving up 11 hits and striking out three. Phillips split time with Krysten Connelly in the circle for the Saints. They combined for seven strike outs.
Game Two
Queens took the lead first in this one, scoring a single run in the first inning. The Royals were able to put two on base by a Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) walk and an error by Kassie Hollman put Bowman on.
Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive ) singled up the middle to drive in Goode and give Queens the 1-0 lead.
The single run would hold until the third inning when North Georgia scored four and added another four in the fourth to hold an 8-1 edge.
The final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game.
Jester threw for Queens striking out six and giving up nine hits. Phillips was back out there for the Saints ringing up eight strike outs and giving up two hits.
