CHARLOTTE, N.C. --
Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) scored the game-winning goal, his third of the day, with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter to put Queens University of Charlotte up en route to a 12-10 win over the visiting Florida Southern University Sunday afternoon. Boyle's four points help extend the Royals' win streak to three games as they improve to 3-1 on the season, while Florida Southern falls to 1-2.
The Royals fell behind 0-1 after Cam Holding scored the first of his game-high six goals at 7:29. Winning all six face offs in the first quarter, it wasn't until the 3:14 mark that the Royals took advantage of their dominance in the circle and posted four unanswered goals to close out the first stanza of play.
Down 1-4, Florida Southern charged back with four consecutive goals, including Holding's second and third of the game, to take the lead 5-4. Just over a minute after taking the lead, Adam Long was called for interference and opened the door for Queens to move in. The Royals didn't flinch, as it took
Brian Masterson (Toledo, Ohio, St. John's Jesuit) just 10 seconds into the penalty to tie the game at five. Queens struck twice more with goals from
T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon) and
Alex Warehime (Millersville, Md., Old Mill ), putting the Royals up 7-5 at the break.
Southern Florida bounced back in the second half, capitalizing on a slashing penalty against
Hunter Roof at 10:31 when Brian Rossetti assisted Holding with his fourth goal of the game, just 17 seconds into the penalty. Rossetti tallied a goal of his own at 7:20 to tie the game at seven. The Royals'
Travis Speer (Newtown, Conn., Newtown) would score unassisted to break the tie and go into the fourth quarter up 8-7.
Each team scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes and 13 seconds of fourth-quarter action. Southern Florida struck first with goals from Holding and Corey Brown, before Masterson and
Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads) each scored their second goals of the game to go up 10-9. Holding had one last spark left, scoring his sixth goal of the game to match Queens at 10 goals each. Forty-seven seconds later, Boyle rallied the Royals and broke the tie for good, putting Queens up 11-10. Warehime scored his second goal of the game 16 seconds later to add insurance, as the Royals would go on to win 12-10.
Queens outplayed Southern Florida in circle, winning the first eight face offs of the game and 19-of-26 overall. The Royals' hustle also played a part, as they gathered 13 ground balls more (38-25) than Southern Florida.
Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) stopped 12-of-22 shots faced to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Royals are slated to host Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday, March 6th at 2 p.m.
