Women’s basketball closes regular season with win

The Royals defeated Erskine 75-63.

DUE WEST, S.C.- The Royals of Queens University of Charlotte ended their regular season defeating the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 75-64 in an away game spoiling Senior Day for the opponent. Queens improves to 16-11 overall and 15-7 in Conference Carolinas. The Fleet finish the regular season with an 11-15 overall record (10-12 CC). 
 
The Fleet full-court defense caused problems for the Royals in the first half as they scored 18 points off of 16 Royal turnovers and led at the half 38 to 29. Queens shot 44% from the floor and 85.7% from the free throw line in the half keeping them in good position to take over the second half.

The Royals improved their defensive intensity and ball control after the half to bounce back and take the lead. Compared to the first half, the Royals only turned the ball over six times.  In addition, the Royals tightened their defense holding the Fleet to just 22.6% (7 of 31) shooting.  On the day, the Fleet shot a feeble 29.7% to the Royals 44.4%.

The Royals had six players finish in double-figures.  The Royals were led by Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, N.C., Providence Day) who netted 14 points in the victory. Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) followed with 12 points while Jazmine Edmonds (Manassas, Va., CD Hylton) chipped in 11.  Shakaria Hamlin (Hartsville, S.C., Hartsville), Cecilia Tchangoue (St. Jean Le Blanc, France, Forsyth Country Day), and Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) dropped 10 points apiece. Battle also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Royals.
 
Leading the Fleet was Porsha Morgan with a game-high 16 points.  Audrey Timmerman contributed 14 points.  Elizabeth Tatum led the Fleet on the boards with six rebounds. 
 
The Fleet secured the eighth seed in the Conference Carolinas postseason tournament and play at first seed Barton College on Monday at 7 p.m.

Queens host Mount Olive on Monday at 7pm in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament.
